WPC Cladding vs Timber Cladding: Which Is Better for Perth Homes?

Both give you a warm, natural timber look — but they perform very differently once they're actually on your wall, especially in Perth's climate.

Maintenance

Solid timber cladding needs regular sanding, staining or sealing — typically every 1-3 years — to stop it drying out, fading or cracking in the sun. WPC cladding doesn't need painting, staining or sealing at all; an occasional wash down with water keeps it looking sharp.

Durability in Perth's climate

Perth's combination of intense UV exposure, dry summers and occasional heavy winter rain is hard on solid timber — it's prone to warping, splitting and checking (surface cracking) as it repeatedly dries out and reabsorbs moisture. WPC cladding is far more dimensionally stable, since the plastic polymer component resists moisture absorption and UV degradation much better than solid wood.

Pest and rot resistance

Timber cladding can be vulnerable to termites, borers and rot, particularly at joints and fixing points where moisture can get trapped. WPC cladding's composite structure is far more resistant to pest damage and doesn't rot.

Appearance

This is where the two are closest — quality WPC cladding is designed to closely replicate the grain, texture and colour variation of natural timber, and at a glance most people won't be able to tell the difference. The gap has narrowed a lot as WPC manufacturing has improved.

Cost over time

Timber cladding is often cheaper to purchase upfront, but the ongoing cost of maintenance (labour, materials, and the risk of replacing damaged boards) adds up over the life of the cladding. WPC costs more initially in most cases, but the near-zero maintenance requirement generally makes it more cost-effective over a 10-20 year horizon.

Which should you choose?

If you want the lowest possible upfront cost and don't mind ongoing upkeep, timber is a reasonable choice. If you want a low-maintenance exterior that holds up to Perth's sun and rain without regular attention, WPC is the stronger long-term option — which is why it's the material we've chosen to specialise in.
